Our Journey with Halo Onyx: Our Black UV Adhesive

Last year we introduced our new Black UV Adhesive: Halo Onyx.

We've had many customers love using this adhesive. But over time we noticed some issues popup where the adhesive become extremely thick and would not come out of the bottle. it is surprising because this is not a problem we see with our other UV Adhesives and it wasn't clear why this was happening for some of the bottles.

Working closely with our manufacturer, we've been pushing them to improve the stability of this adhesive and to try to figure out what is going on.

After more testing and trial and error, we figured out what is most likely going on.

What we found

  • Unopened shelf life: Our latest rounds of testing show Halo Onyx is reliably fresh for about 4 months unopened, not the 6 months we initially expected.
  • Action we’re taking now: While we continue to tweak and test, we’re ordering in smaller batches so stock stays fresher.
  • Our recommendation: Please order only what you’ll use within a few weeks of receiving it for the best performance and to avoid hitting the unopened shelf life.

Why might the black version behave differently?

Our working theory is that the pitch-black pigment is playing a role in the shorter unopened shelf life—this is not something we see with our other UV adhesives that share a very similar composition. We’re not 100% certain yet, so we’re investigating several possibilities:

  1. Pigment–photoinitiator interactions: Carbon based black pigments can interact with photoinitiators in UV systems, potentially nudging slow pre-reactions over long storage times.
  2. Impurities in pigment: Even tiny amounts can catalyze or destabilize components, shortening shelf life.
  3. Higher surface area of pigment particles: More surface area can adsorb reactive species or stabilizers, changing how the formula “rests” in the bottle.
  4. Light and heat absorption: Black pigments absorb more light/heat; temperature swings during transit/storage could have a bigger cumulative effect over time, even when the bottle is closed.
  5. Oxygen management: Colorant load can subtly change viscosity and headspace dynamics, which might affect how much oxygen diffuses in or is consumed over months.

What we’re doing next

  • Formula tweaks in progress: We’re testing alternate pigment grades, dispersion methods, and stabilizer packages to improve unopened stability without compromising performance.
  • Smaller, fresher lots: Until we finalize an update we love, we’re keeping production lots smaller so you receive newer bottles.
  • Ongoing testing: Accelerated and real-time aging tests are running now so we can confirm improvements with data, not guesses.

How to get the best results right now with Halo Onyx

  • Buy what you’ll use within a few weeks of receipt (fresh is best).
  • Store upright, tightly closed, in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
  • Avoid leaving bottles in hot cars, near windows, or close to curing lamps.
